Rome
Day 12: Modern Rome
Since we both work in Architecture, we used the day to go outside of the historic city limits and discover something beyond: Modern Rome. Starchitects (star architects) have works gracing Rome that most tourists never see. We walked an hour from our hotel, through the park and past the zoo, to see the work of Renzo Piano, Zaha Hadid, and Pier Luigi Nervi. Behold! Modern Rome!
All these modern works are within 10 minutes of each other. The MAXII museum has a great cafe for people watching!
Walking back through the historic city, we admired the Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps.
Please take a moment to grieve the loss of our favorite grocery, Di per Di. It was the best! We discovered it was replaced with another grocery, on our way back to the hotel. Sad day.
Miscellanea was a no-brainer for dinner. It is at the rear of the Pantheon with great atmosphere at a low cost. We came here all the time when we lived here in college. The food is simple and good. The wait staff is friendly, and if you get lucky /leave your Rick Steves' book laying around, you may get some "sexy" strawberry wine on the house.

Day 13: Savoring Rome
Today was our last full day in Rome. so we made the most of it! We started at Trajan's Spice Market, then proceeded to the Colosseum and then went on to the Forum. We really wore ourselves out , and we need a recharge (aka gelato). Gelateria Monteforte was our gelato stop of choice this time, but our all time favorite is Gelateria Cafe Pasticera.
We shared our last dinner in Rome with our tour members at Target restaurant. Kathleen, our guide organized it, and everyone in the group came. It was a terrific way to end our trip- surrounded by our fellow travelers and recalling our favorite memories from our time in Italy.

The best part about our trip was how stress free it was since the major parts of planning were taken care of. The next best part was having the flexibility to do as much or as little with others as we wanted. Since it was our honeymoon, we opted to go our own route most of the time, but it was fun to run into a friendly face in the streets every now and then.
We also wanted to spend our time out and about exploring and not too much time in museums. Since the days are free with My-Way tours, we knew we wouldn't end up spending time seeing things we weren't prioritizing this trip. Kathleen, our guide, helped plan special experiences for the group when there was interest like our wine tasting and group meal in Varenna. The My-Way trips are what you make them! They are called My-Way tours because it really is Europe YOUR WAY! |
The Real Deal
This digital scrapbook is a great way for us to share our trip with all our friends and family, but when Kristin remembers her trips, she usually go back to her old school scrapbooks. She's kept a scrapbook/ journal for every trip since 1996. It's filled with tickets, brochures, pictures, and our daily excitement. It's a way for us to never forget all the wonderful times we've had and helps us plan future trips when we go back to the same places.
It takes some discipline, but it's worth the effort. We recommend you give it a try too! You won't regret it! |
