San Gimignano
Day 9: San Gimignano Visit on Our Way to Assisi
We stopped right outside of San Gimignano to admire the Tuscan countryside before venturing to the base of the Italian hill town. Our bus dropped us off near the local Co-op. We couldn't believe our luck! We hustled into the store with our always handy reusable Rick Steves' bags and picked up some bread, meat, cheese, and water. Confession: we had a last minute impulse buy of Kinder eggs too!
If you don't know what Kinder eggs are, you aren't alone. They aren't allowed in the states because the the toy inside of the hollow chocolate egg is considered to be a chocking hazard.
We stuffed our impromptu picnic lunch in my bag (seen bulging in the picture below) and began to walk up, up, up. Once we passed though the city wall, we could easily imagine ourselves back in the 1200s (with a couple hundred more towers and way less souvenirs). It is a quaint town that's overrun with tourist on the main drags, but when we allowed ourselves to wander way from the crowds, we found secluded streets and unobstructed views to the countryside.
Hiking up to the top of the town rewarded us with the best views out to the surrounding area and shady picnic spots perfect for savoring a Kinder egg or two.
